The 1854 fire engine was pulled by men, not horses. It was housed halfway up the hill on Main Street, in case a fire was up on High Street. The large hose was placed in a well or cistern or the river and smaller hoses attached at the valves on the front of the machine. The last fire for the big pumper was Sam Collins's house on Collins Road in 1912. The water froze in the hoses and the old house burned down. The 23 room mansion was located on the present site of Calvary Cemetery. |
