Post Office and General Store

General stores carried every kind of merchandise imaginable, and often included the village post office. This one came from Canton Street (Route 44 area). The store was a regular meeting place for checker players (note the checkers made from sawed off corn cobs) by the warmth of the pot-bellied stove.
We have barrels for crackers and flour, patent medicines, kerosene lanterns and even "penny " candy. Your guide may go behind the counter and act as the storekeeper to sell candy - but, no longer for a penny!
To use the telephone you lifted the receiver, turned the crank to get the attention of the operator and then told her who you wanted to talk to. She would make the connection and even find the doctor for you if he was out on a call.
Note the large coffee grinder and behind it the ice skates, mechanical apple pares, and horse fly nets.
