NEWS RELEASE From: Canton Historical Museum 11 Front Street Collinsville, CT 06019 860-693-8893 Kathleen R. Woolam, Curator FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MUSEUM RECEIVES MAJOR INDIAN ARTIFACT COLLECTION The Canton Historical Museum has received an extensive collection of Indian artifacts collected by George Plude of Avon early in the last century along the banks of the Farmington River in Avon, Simsbury and Farmington. The donation was made by David W. Gilchrist, Jr. of Canton in memory of his wife, Marie Plude Gilchrist, daughter of George Plude. The artifacts have been in the process of being evaluated over the past several months by Lisa Marie Evans, a CCSU graduate student in anthropology and archaeology. Her findings indicate that many of the projectiles (arrow and spear heads) are not from this area but come from as far away as Ohio. The 300+ artifacts are up to 10,000 years old and will double the size of the museum’s collection. A similar donation was made five years ago by the Dyer family and is on display in the museum. The evaluation process is expected to be completed by December after which the artifacts will be placed in exhibit cases for viewing by the public. A formal dedication reception will be held at the museum on December 19 at 2:00 pm in honor of Marie Plude Gilchrist in whose memory the collection has been donated. The public is invited to attend. |
